Too much of a good thing

Many cats enjoy being stroked, but only for a while. When it gets too much, they suddenly bite or scratch, often seemingly without warning.

The warning signs

There are usually signals: the tail twitches, the fur on the back twitches, the ears turn back or the head whips round to your hand.

Stop in time

Stop at the first warning sign and leave the cat in peace. Short strokes on the head and cheeks are usually more welcome than long ones on the back.

In shortWatch for a twitching tail and ears, then stop before she bites.
