Understanding dog language

What yawning, licking and wagging mean.

wagging isn't only joycalming signalsinvitation to play

Tail wagging

Wagging mainly shows excitement, not always joy. A loose, wide wag with a relaxed body is friendly, a stiff, high wag tends to be tense.

Yawning and licking

If a dog yawns in an unfamiliar situation or licks his nose, he often wants to calm himself or others. Give him some space then.

The invitation to play

Front low, back up, tail wagging: that's the play bow. Your dog is saying: let's play.

Recognising fear

A tucked tail, ears pinned back and an averted gaze show fear. Don't crowd him then and let him come to you.

In shortLook at the whole body, not just the tail.
