The first days with your cat
A quiet room, hiding places and no rush.

A room to settle in
Set up a quiet room first: food, water, litter box, a scratching spot and a hiding place. The new home is huge and full of strange smells, a small room feels safe.

Hiding is allowed
Many cats crawl under the bed or into a box for the first few days. That's normal. Don't pull her out, she'll come when she's ready.

The cat sets the pace
Sit in the room, read or talk quietly. Hold out your hand and let her sniff it. Only stroke her once she comes to you for contact.

Same food as before
At first, feed the food she knows. Ask the shelter or previous owner. You can switch slowly later over one or two weeks.

Visitors can wait
Only invite friends and family once your cat moves around confidently. For the first weeks, a get-to-know-you visit at the vet is enough.

Secure the windows
New cats startle easily and jump through open windows. Secure windows and balcony before the cat is allowed to explore the whole home.
