Why does my cat scratch?
And how to keep the sofa in one piece.
Scratching is a must
Scratching keeps the claws in shape, stretches the muscles and leaves scent marks from the paws. You can't stop it, only redirect it.
The right scratching spot
A good scratching post is sturdy, tall enough for the cat to stretch out fully, and doesn't wobble. Some cats prefer to scratch horizontally, there are scratching boards for that.
Location is everything
Put the scratching spot where your cat scratches, and next to where she sleeps. Many scratch right after waking up.
Protecting the sofa
Cover the favourite spot on the sofa for a while and put the scratching post right in front of it. Praise your cat when she uses it. Scolding only makes her insecure.
